Bridges Earthquake Relief Effort
The October 8, 2005 earthquake is estimated to have resulted in over 79,000 deaths. Measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, it resulted in a massive destruction of Northern Pakistan. The Bridges family, was swift in joining the relief efforts and distributed food, clothing and medicines among the survivors.
With the recent earthquake, Pakistan is now in a higher seismic category and stands at a risk of greater devastation in future. Although immediate efforts for disaster relief are underway, the country needs a long term plan of rehabilitation and reconstruction, which accounts for the high risk due to major fault lines in the north and south of the region. The rebuilding agenda must emphasize the use of building materials and construction methods which are hazard safe. A thorough risk analysis of the affected areas must be conducted before any construction work begins so as to avoid rebuilding in areas at a higher risk of future devastation.
Bridges Development Consortium intends to use its capacity to research ways that can improve preparedness and mitigate negative effects of natural hazards. GIS Lab at Bridges uses Risk Triangle to measure community vulnerability, and urban seismic risk in the region. Consortium experts also offer insight to integrate natural disaster management into sustainable development.
